Pre-Budget Announcements
12 May 2003
by Tess Casey

The Budget will be read on 15 May and at the moment there is a flurry of pre-budget announcements from various Ministers. Some that maybe of interest to VASS members are:...

 $3.6 million has been allocated to setting up a Community and Voluntary Sector Office.  The office will provide a central policy contact point in the government for community and voluntary organisations, and provide cross-sectoral policy advice.  It will also support development of strategic leadership within the community and voluntary sector, and will be based in the Ministry of Social Development.
 $8.2 million has been allocated to social policy research. A small portion of this funding will be spent on research to examine the Sickness and Invalids Benefits dynamics, population and growth factors and to ‘inform the government’s welfare reform programme’. Most of the rest of this money ($5.2 million) will go to a project to network NZ’s leading tertiary sector social scientists and to share their expertise with policy makers.  At the moment lack of funding has created a situation where research projects are generally project-based and often not well linked to the needs of potential users, including government departments.
