What's Happening ...
19 April 2001by Tess Casey
VASS members are involved in providing a variety of services to people with disabilities.
VASS President, Robyn Klos, and Vice President, Ian Beker, were both invited to be members of the Vocational Services Review Reference Group. The Reference Group recently had their last meeting and we now wait with interest to see what the outcome of the Review will be.
Vocational services are becoming increasingly focussed on the needs of the individual and our members are constantly seeking to refine and develop individual planning systems. Hamilton's Lifestyle 2000, for example, is working on a system called Person Centred Planning. CEO, Lynda Rangitaawa, says that the purpose of the system is to assist the person in gaining control over their own life and to increase opportunities for participation in the community. It also assists individuals to recognise desires, interests and dreams and to develop a plan to turn dreams into reality through team effort.
For the past year or so VASS has been working on developing Guidelines for Best Practice, for use by Vocational Service providers in the disability sector. This has been a comprehensive process involving research and data gathering, and thorough evaluation by a range of disability groups and service providers.
A draft document is now being circulated for review and we are pleased to say that the Guidelines will be launched in July. There will be a series of Implementation Seminars held throughout the country following the launch. We will keep you posted!
